This post is about happiness and pleasure in Epicurus. He was a Greek philosopher who lived from approximately 340 to 270 BC, which brings us back to antiquity. After Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, Epicurus is also a major figure in ancient philosophy and continues to make waves with his ideas – the topic of pleasure – to this day. The school of thought based on his teachings is Epicureanism. On the difference between Epicureanism, hedonism, and stoicism: • Epikureismus, Hedonismus, Stoizismus · Unt... The geographical center of Epicurus's reflections on happiness and pleasure was his garden. There, he sympathetically and contrary to common custom, welcomed enslaved people and women. The fact that some of them were hetaerae—female prostitutes in antiquity—may have contributed to the rumor that Epicurus held orgies in his garden, which would fit with his concept of pleasure. But this very concept of pleasure in Epicurus has often been misunderstood, which contributes somewhat to his enduring fame. More on this in the article.
