The twin belfries of Lija contain a set of 5 bells all cast by John Taylor of Loughborough England in 1946. The largest bell weighs almost 4.5 tons and is one of two bells sounding the same note and also cast by Taylor. The other bells are found at the Cathedral Church Victoria Gozo -cast in 2003. This set of bells is considered to be cast on a semi-heavy profile meaning that the bells are not light in weight in comparison to the bells cast by Barigozzi which are much lighter in weight. All the bells are mechanically tuned from the inside and all bells are hung fixed to their headstocks and therefore ringing is achieved by manually swinging the clapper to strike the soundbows of the bells. This set of bells is the first set of bells ever to be cast by John Taylor for Malta - it was the first set of large mechanically Taylor-Simpson tuned bells for Malta and is considered by many to be the finest set of bells on Malta. The bells themselves sound wonderful which is aided by the fascinating setting of the church and also by the rather rigorous restrictions imposed by the church authorities that specify nothing short of excellent quality bellringing which is a tribute to Maltese bellringing and the John Taylor bell foundry itself.
