Mont Chaberton

Mont Chaberton, on account of its elevation at 3,131 m and strategic value on the Italian-French border, was chosen for an Italian military installation comprised of eight large gun turrets and built on the summit between 1898 and 1910. During World War II, it was revived, although was swiftly disabled by French mortars. There are a number of rooms and passageways beneath the turrets which would have been used for habitation and storage of ammunition. Many additional remnants from WWII remain on the mountain. Since 1947, Mont Chaberton has been within French territory. This video is a sound walk undertaken on 13th July, 2025, mainly through the rooms and passages beneath the remains of the eight gun turrets. Towards the end, I walk around the turrets and finally across the summit of the mountain looking down on the turrets. The sounds of snow, ice, water, dripping and rubble resonate through the unique acoustics of this building. Perhaps less desired is the roaring of motorbikes in the valley below (perhaps 8 km away) and the voices of other visitors. As is shown, parts of the interior of the building are in a state of collapse so you should not enter.
