🔴 Râmeț Monastery (Alba) is located 34 km from Alba-Iulia and 18 km from Teiuș. on Valea Geoagiului, in a place called “Valea Mănăstirii”, at the entrance to the Râmețului Gorges from the Trascăului Mountains. The monastery, dominated by limestone walls that rise on either side of the valley, is considered the first and most organized monastery in the Apuseni Mountains, which has survived to the present day and hides in its fragile walls, unknown mysteries, and legends. The church also called "Garden of Heaven in Apuseni", has had over time not only a religious, national role but also a special educational and cultural role. It is known precisely that the third layer of frescoes on the interior walls was painted by Mihu from Crișul Alb in 1377. This element makes the place one of the few Romanian stone churches dating back to the 13th century. In 1506, the monastery came under the protection of the ruler Radu Vodă of Wallachia, who received from King Vladislav the estate of Stremţ from the land of Râmeţi, it benefits from the care of the boyar families who owned the domain. Over the years, the monastery and the church were also under the protection of Matei Corvin, as well as of Mihai Viteazul, the one who restored it, being one of the few places of worship which remained Orthodox in the eighteenth century, until its two destructions, known during the turbulent period of fighting of the Transylvanian Romanians for the defense of Orthodoxy. For the first time, the monastery was attacked with cannons by General Bukow. After another destruction, as retaliation for the participation of the locals at the revolt of Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan, (1785), the church was rebuilt in 1792. The monastery reopened in 1940, and in 1955 the synod decided to transform it into a nunnery. In 1959, it was abolished by the communists, but the nuns return in 1962, under the "cover" of a carpet factory. Few know that the old church was in an advanced state of degradation, It was saved in 1988 following a complicated process of lifting of the construction. On August 8, 1988, a team led by Dr. Eng. Eugeniu Iordăchescu started an ambitious process, as a result of which the old church was raised by 2.08 meters.
