Apple harvest in an orchard in the heart of the Ruhr region: Volunteers from the city gather here every year to harvest apples from Dortmund's orchard. The goal of the event is to produce regional apple juice from the harvested apples. From our broadcast on October 8, 2019 Orchards are valuable – special heirloom apple varieties, such as the Red Iron Apple, grow particularly frequently in orchards. These heirloom varieties from orchards sometimes have a taste that takes some getting used to, but are sometimes very well tolerated, especially by allergy sufferers. This is due to the polyphenols they contain, which can counteract the allergens in apples from the orchard. In such an orchard, you can see what some apple varieties originally looked like. The fruit in orchards generally doesn't require spraying, but they are also less productive than commercial plane trees, which is why orchards are unfortunately not generally suitable for large-scale cultivation. The apples from the orchard are primarily used for apple juice and pectin. We visited an orchard in Dortmund and spoke with Jochen Helle, who maintains the orchard, as well as some volunteer harvesters. His orchard is popular, and some particularly rare apple varieties can be found there. In this article, you'll learn why orchards are so worth protecting and why particularly old apple varieties can be found there. Author: Pina Dietsche --- Thanks for watching! Did you enjoy the video?
