Matsushima is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, along with Miyajima in Aki (Hiroshima Prefecture) and Amanohashidate in Tango (Kyoto Prefecture). In this video, we will take you on a tour of Matsushima. The "Four Great Views of Matsushima" are four observatories located on hills and high ground around Matsushima Bay, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the 260 islands in Matsushima Bay. Yuukan (Ogidani), one of the Four Great Views, is 55.8 meters above sea level and offers a view of Shiogama Bay and the islands to the southeast. Ougidani is a place where you can see the divine sunrise in autumn and winter, as well as the huge maple trees along with the islands, making it one of the best spots for viewing the autumn leaves in Matsushima. Kanran-tei is a tea ceremony house that was originally built at Fushimi-Momoyama Castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and was moved to Matsushima by Date Masamune. The building is designated as a tangible cultural property of the prefecture and is also famous for its autumn leaves and moon viewing. Kanran-tei is built facing the coast, and you can enjoy walking around the area while looking at the islands of Matsushima. Godaido Hall is the symbolic building of Matsushima, and is designated as an "Important Cultural Property" by the government. The current hall was rebuilt by Date Masamune prior to the reconstruction of Zuiganji Temple, and is said to be the oldest Momoyama architecture in the Tohoku region. The view of Matsushima Bay from the small island where the Godaido Hall stands is also exceptional. Matsushima Castle is a remnant of a former tourist hotel, which is now used as an observatory. The Shin Tomiyama Observatory is located on the north side of Zuiganji Temple and offers a frontal view of all of Matsushima Bay. Sokan (Otakamori), one of the four great views of Matsushima, is a 105.8-meter high peak located in the middle of Miyato Island on the east side of Matsushima Bay, and is known as a famous sunset spot overlooking Matsushima Bay to the west.
