BLOOD TRANSFUSION REACTIONS | Hemolytic, Febrile, Allergic, Bacterial, TACO, TRALI, GVHD Does the idea of helping with a blood transfusion make you super nervous? Blood transfusions can be really scary to do in nursing school, because there are so many things you need to think about and remember! In this video, I'll give you an EASY breakdown of the 7 types of blood transfusion reactions you need to know about in nursing school. Here's what we'll talk about: Blood transfusion reactions happen when the patient's body doesn't like the blood we are giving it, or there's an issue with the blood. There are 7 main types of blood transfusion reactions you need to know about in nursing school: 1. Allergic Blood Transfusion Reaction: Patient's immune system is triggered to defend against the donor blood. 2. Febrile Blood Transfusion Reaction: The patient's immune system creates antibodies against the donor blood. 3. Hemolytic Blood Transfusion Reaction: The patient's immune system makes antibodies to attack the donor blood cells. 4. Bacterial Blood Transfusion Reaction: Donor blood is contaminated with bacteria. 5. Transfusion Associated Circulatory Overload (TACO): Too much volume too soon, causing fluid to build up in the lungs. 6. Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury (TRALI): Rapid fluid buildup in the lungs, but it's NOT due to the amount of blood given. 7.
