A Cat’s First Rice Planting in Northern Japan

Spring has finally arrived in Mata’s village. As snowmelt swells the river, Mata heads into the forest to catch fish for his dinner. Along the way, he meets Miru’s family, who are preparing their rice fields for the planting season. Before modern machinery, farmers often relied on oxen to turn the winter-hardened soil. The fields are then filled with water, carefully leveled, and planted with young rice seedlings—one small bundle at a time. For Mata, it is his very first experience of rice planting.
