WEIRD Dover Hydraulic Elevator - Mathematics/Science Center - Oakland University - Auburn Hills, MI
Surprise! I recently took a weeklong trip to the Detroit, Michigan area! I got to see some incredible elevators, including many firsts for me. I have over 120 videos from the trip, so stay tuned for the rest coming in the next few days! To begin, I thought it would be fun to upload this very odd Dover Impulse. I had some time to kill while waiting for a friend, so I killed some time by exploring Oakland University. While I didn't have a ton of time, I got to ride a few interesting things throughout the campus. This is definitely one of the more interesting Dover impulses I've ever ridden. This building is shaped as a "U" and is built on a hill while being connected to other buildings at the tips. Due to this, there are some weird leveling mismatches between the other two buildings. There are 2 elevators in this building (well 3 if you count the hidden service in the same shaft as this one, but it's only publicly seen on a few floors and locked). This elevator is located right on the right tip of the building and connects to Dodge Hall. As a result, this thing serves many half floors. Some of them are in the MSC, and some are in Dodge Hall (primarily labeled with a "D" next to the floor number). As if the layout of this thing isn't odd enough, it has some other weird quirks. It has a 3D door sensor (which barely works), the weird floor passing chime that sounds like an Otis, no Dover logo (which I can't recall ever seeing before), and is quite slow -- by design according to the signs. The weirdest of all, though, is the "handicapped button" on most of the floor landings. As shown at 3:35, some of the floors on this elevator have a separate call button with a wheelchair logo, in addition to the standard call station. When this separate button is pressed, it does NOT register a call outside on the call station, but rather, it places a call directly on the COP. I've never seen anything like this before, and to be honest, I don't seem the point of it. It doesn't seem to work well. In any event, this is definitely an interesting elevator. I love the startup and motor this thing has, although to be fair, this probably should've been traction. Definitely one of the stranger impulses I've ever ridden!
