1984 is one of the most famous dystopian novels. Through the adventures of Winston Smith, Orwell leads us into a dark, violent world where freedom of thought and expression have been eliminated. The Party, represented by the figure of Big Brother, controls Oceania, history, life, minds, and people's feelings. No one can escape Big Brother's eye. Winston begins writing a diary and ends up falling in love with a colleague, two wicked acts forbidden by the Party. He believes it is still possible to rebel against the Party's dictatorship, and he will pay the consequences. Orwell invites us to reflect on how important it is to defend our intellectual and social freedoms against any political or intellectual dictatorship, to preserve and uphold our dignity as human beings.
