After decades spent in an environment where precision was paramount, Allen Millyard left the security of full-time employment to concentrate on his first love, building bespoke motorcycles. No ordinary mechanical engineer, Millyard is known the world over for turning improbable pipe dreams into reality. The creator of aero-engined and V12 two-wheelers, not to mention numerous ‘additional cylinders’ bikes, he typically tries to make things look as ‘OEM’ as possible, a trait which has seen the renowned Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum acquire some of his past projects. Conceived without thought to onward sale and coming directly from the great man’s personal collection, the unique Millyard Viper V10 has become a legend in its own lifetime. The genesis for its conception was the acquisition of a decade-old Dodge Viper GTS engine (complete with snake’s head-embossed magnesium rocker covers) in 2004. Painstakingly handcrafted over the next five years, the eight-litre V10-powered machine passed a Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval Test before being initially road registered as ‘RX09 LVH’ on August 1st, 2009. An avid Motorcycle News reader since the 1970s, when he delivered copies as a paper boy, Millyard invited MCN’s Chief Road Test Rider, Bruce Dunn, to sample the Viper V10 at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground later that same month. The result, using a higher-geared rear sprocket but not full throttle, was 207.101mph! Credited with developing 500bhp and 525lb. ft., the monstrous powerplant has tubular subframes (steel front and alloy back) bolted to it, while the single-sided swing arm is attached to the gearbox. Typically well-executed, the Millyard Viper V10 features tailor-made forks, 75mm JCB hydraulic ram stanchions, converted Vauxhall Carlton damper rods, Hagon springs and two recalibrated Yamaha R1 shock absorbers at the rear. The original cast iron flywheel was supplanted by an alloy one, the handmade exhaust headers were ceramic coated and the ‘cans’ modelled on those of a Suzuki TL1000S, in keeping with the bike’s ‘street cruiser’ æsthetic. Impressively, Millyard has covered over 9,000 miles aboard the Viper V10 including trips to Guernsey, the Isle of Wight and the Isle of Man where he rode it around the famous TT circuit. Invited to attend the 2014 Salon Privé concours d’élégance, the two-wheeler scooped the prestigious event’s ‘Most OTT’ (Over The Top) award, being re-registered with the decidedly appropriate number plate ‘V10 OTT’ thereafter. Testament to the trust which exists between Allen Millyard and his fellow The Motorbike Show presenter Henry Cole, the latter agreed to be pillion for a successful attempt on the Fastest Tandem Motorcycle World Record. Documented on the small screen and internet, the duo beat the previous record by almost 5mph in May, 2023. Using the generous runway at Elvington Airfield, North Yorkshire, the intrepid duo were officially timed at 183.5mph. Described by Millyard himself as one of the most significant and recognisable members of his personal collection, the Viper V10 boasts its own Wikipedia page. A former MCN cover star, it has also graced the pages of The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail and Daily Star. The subject of numerous internet articles and YouTube searches, the bike has a global following. Better executed to our eyes than the ten similarly powered but non-street legal Tomahawk four-wheeled motorcycles which Dodge reputedly sold for $555,000 each and a world away from the various modified ‘Boss Hoss’ V10 bikes out there, the Millyard Viper V10 stands in a class of one. H&H is honoured to be the first auction house that Allen has entrusted with one of his creations directly. A one-off built by a one-off, this amazing motorcycle is accompanied by a history file, V5C Registration Document and two interchangeable seats: a lower-slung, more supportive solo seat, and a traditional looking dual seat.
