Several economies have expanded their participation in international trade over the last three decades, but Brazil has followed a different path. With a strong dependence on commodity exports, high bureaucracy, and low integration into global production chains, the country has lost competitiveness and seen its productivity grow at a slower pace than other countries. Brazil has maintained a relatively closed economy: the sum of imports and exports represents a smaller share of GDP when compared to the world average and other emerging economies. Excessive bureaucracy and regulatory complexity have contributed to reducing Brazilian competitiveness.
