Cantor Shmuel Malavsky (1894–1985) was a Jewish-American cantor and composer, renowned for his performances with his family across the Jewish world. He was born in the town of Smila, near Kyiv, in the southwestern Russian Empire (present-day Ukraine). From a young age, he gained fame as a child prodigy and earned the nickname "Shmulikel from Smila." In 1914, at the age of 20, he immigrated to the United States, where he was mentored by the renowned cantor Yossele Rosenblatt, who was also from Ukraine. The two toured together across the U.S., performing Jewish music concerts. During the 1930s to the 1950s, the Malavsky family—Shmuel, his four daughters (Goldie, Trudie, Ruth, and Minnie), and his two sons (Albert and Morton)—performed in prayer services and programs featuring cantorial music and Jewish folk songs. Shmuel served as the lead soloist, accompanied by his children as a choir. The family achieved great success and performed for numerous Jewish communities worldwide, including in Israel. Their performances blended the tradition of Ashkenazi cantorial music with Jewish folk music, contributing to the preservation and dissemination of Jewish musical heritage. One of the family’s most famous recordings is their rendition of the "Unetanneh Tokef" prayer, recited during the repetition of the Musaf service on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This performance highlights the family’s impressive vocal abilities and the deep emotional expression they infused into their prayers. Shmuel Malavsky passed away in 1985, but his musical legacy continues to influence the world of cantorial music and Jewish music. The family played a significant role in preserving and promoting traditional Jewish music, leaving an indelible mark on global Jewish culture.
