Taltioitu Madetojan salissa Oulun Musiikkikeskuksessa 22.1.2023. SINFONIA SORMUSTEN HERRASTA Johan de Meijn (s. 1953) ensimmäinen sinfonia ’The Lord of the Rings’ (1987) pohjautuu J.R.R. Tolkienin Taru sormusten herrasta -trilogiaan. Teoksen johtoaihe kuvaa taikasormusta, jonka alkukantaiset voimat ovat takoneet maailman turvaksi tai tuhoksi. Sormuksen omistaja oli satoja vuosia Klonkku. Kun sormus päätyi hobittien haltuun, sen pahat voimat heräsivät ja taistelu sormuksen omistajuudesta alkaa. Maailma pelastuu vain, jos sormus tuhotaan siellä, missä se taottiin: Tuomiovuorella, Mordorissa. Velho Gandalf antaa tehtävän Frodolle ja osoittaa hänen avukseen muita hobitteja, ritareita ja kuninkaita. Tehtävä saadaan suoritettua, ponnistelun ja uhrausten jälkeen. Ensimmäinen osa on muotokuva viisaasta velhosta, Gandalfista, jota kuvaava juhlava motiivi esiintyy uudelleen myös neljännessä ja viidennessä osassa. Allegro vivace -jakso kuvaa velhon yllättäviä mielenmuutoksia ja hänen ratsunsa Hallavaharjan laukkaa. Toinen osa Lórien välittää vaikutelmia haltijoiden kauniista metsämaasta ja eksoottisista linnuista, joita puupuhallinsoitinten soolot kuvaavat. Frodon ja Galadrielin kohtaamisesta kertoo viehkeä Allegretto-jakso. Sitten Frodo katsoo Galadrielin peiliin, hopea-astiaan, joka näyttää hänelle kolme näkyä. Uhkaavin niistä on viimeinen, luometon silmä, joka etsii häntä. Klonkku on hirviömäinen olento, jota kuvastaa sopraanosaksofoni. Vihamielisten olioiden hyökkäyksen jälkeen Gandalf taistelee kammottavan voimanhengen, Balrogin kanssa ja syöksyy lopulta kuiluun. Saattue jatkaa kulkuaan hautajaismarssin tahtiin. Viimeinen osa kuvailee huoletonta hobittien tanssia, jonka päättäväinen hymni katkaisee. Sinfonia päättyy resignaatioon, kun Frodo ja Gandalf purjehtivat pois ihmisten maailmasta. A SYMPHONY OF THE RING The first symphony 'The Lord of the Rings' (1987) of Johan de Meij (b. 1953) is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The leading motif of the work describes a magic ring, which the primordial forces have forged for the safety or destruction of the world. For hundreds of years the owner of the ring was Sméagol. When the ring ended up in the possession of the hobbits, its evil powers awoke and the battle for ownership of the ring began. The world can only be saved if the ring is destroyed where it was forged: on Mount Doom, in Mordor. The wizard Gandalf gives the task to Frodo and appoints other hobbits, knights and kings to help him. The task is completed, after effort and sacrifice. The first movement is a portrait of the wise wizard, Gandalf, whose festive motif appears again in the fourth and fifth movements. The Allegro vivace episode describes the wizard's sudden changes of mind and the gallop of his horse Shadowfax. The second movement conveys impressions of the beautiful Lothlórien woodland and exotic birds, described by woodwind solos. The meeting between Frodo and Galadriel is depicted in the charming Allegretto section. Frodo then looks into Galadriel's mirror, a silver dish that shows him three visions. The most menacing of them is the last, an eye with no eyelid, that seeks him. The Sméagol is a monstrous creature, which is reflected by the soprano saxophone. The creature mumbles to itself, hisses and licks, moans and wails, sometimes pitifully, sometimes maliciously, forever searching for its dearest treasure, the ring. A Journey in the Dark, describes the Ring's difficult journey through the Black Abyss of Moria. The slow-stepping cadence and fear sound out in the monotonous rhythm of low brass, piano and percussion. After being attacked by hostile creatures, Gandalf battles a hideous and powerful spirit, Balrog, and eventually plunges into a chasm. The procession continues to the rhythm of the funeral march. The final movement describes a carefree hobbit dance interrupted by a resolute anthem. The symphony ends in resignation as Frodo and Gandalf sail away from the human world.
