In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. In this blessed session of the "Al-Muwatta' Sessions," the esteemed Sheikh Saeed Al-Kamali (may God preserve him) inaugurates the first episode of the comprehensive book, one of the most important books of Islam after the Book of God, namely, the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (may God have mercy on him). The Sheikh takes us on a profound scholarly journey, explaining the reason behind Imam Malik's authorship of this unique book, which he named "Al-Jami'" (The Comprehensive), and why he dedicated it to encompassing meanings and topics not found in ordinary books of jurisprudence, but rather pertaining to the virtues of good deeds, etiquette, spiritual refinement, and the history of the Prophet's city. The Sheikh then moves on to discuss the virtues of Medina, explaining why it was the "origin of faith" and the "place of prophethood," and why it was predominantly called "Al-Madinah" (The City) rather than any other city. He presents the Prophetic evidence that blesses its inhabitants in their measures and weights, citing the hadith of the noble Companion Anas ibn Malik (may God be pleased with him) regarding the Prophet's supplication (peace and blessings be upon him): "O God, bless them in their measures, and bless them in their Sa' and Mudd." The lesson wouldn't pass without the sheikh recounting the moving story of Anas ibn Malik with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and how he served him for ten years without ever being reproached for anything. He then moved on to the story of his mother, Umm Sulaym, with Abu Talha (may God be pleased with them both), drawing lessons in sacrifice, faith, and good upbringing. One of the most beautiful parts of the session was the story of al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf al-Thaqafi's stance towards Anas ibn Malik, and how al-Hajjaj tried to harm the noble companion. However, God provided him with the Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, who upheld the truth and disciplined the tyrant, serving as a lesson for anyone who might consider attacking the companions of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) or the people of knowledge and virtue.
