The Alegrias Blanca is the traditional flamenco guitar in its purest form: a spruce top over Spanish cypress back and sides, a combination that produces the bright, percussive attack and quick response that flamenco demands. Lighter in construction than a classical guitar and built for immediacy, the Blanca is the instrument of the tablao and the concert stage alike. Vicente Carrillo is one of Spain's most respected luthiers, born in 1963 in Casasimarro in the province of Cuenca into a family of guitar makers whose tradition stretches back generations. In 2010, Carrillo received Spain's National Crafts Award in recognition of his broad and consistent trajectory and the great prestige he enjoys among string instrument professionals. His guitars are favored by world-renowned musicians including Paco de Lucía, Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, and Rafael Cañizares. The form played here is Soleares — the emotional and rhythmic heart of flamenco. Built on the same 12-beat compás as Alegrias but slower and more introspective, Soleares is considered by many to be the mother form of flamenco, the foundation from which much of the tradition flows. Its name derives from soledad — solitude — and the form carries that weight: meditative, deeply expressive, and one of the most demanding vehicles for a solo guitarist to inhabit.
