Physical Properties of Alkynes | Alkynes

Alkynes are hydrocarbons containing at least one C - C triple bond. General formula of alkynes is CnH2n-2. Physical properties: 1) At room temperature-pressure containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms are gases, containing 5 to 12 are liquids and higher ones are solids. 2) All alkynes are colorless and odorless compounds except acetylene which has garlic odor. 3) They are slightly soluble in water but more soluble in organic solvents like acetone, benzene and other. 4) Their boiling points, melting points and densities are generally somewhat higher than the corresponding alkanes and alkenes. Alkynes also show a regular change in their physical properties with increasing molecular mass. 5) Specific gravity of alkynes is slightly greater than those of the corresponding alkanes and alkynes.
