The Honduran Police Directorate of Investigations (DPI), through its National Anti-Kidnapping Unit, has reported a worrying upward trend in cases of staged kidnappings in Honduras, recording eight incidents during the first half of 2026. Inspector Josely Mairena explained that this type of crime, classified in the Penal Code as "simulation of a non-existent offense," is frequently used by young people between the ages of 20 and 40, including minors and women, with the aim of obtaining illicit gain or financing irregular migration. In the most recent case, a 22-year-old man was arrested after demanding 50,000 lempiras from his parents, who tricked them into handing over 20,000. He was later located by agents with most of the money in his possession. Authorities have emphasized that mobilizing specialized teams, technology, and institutional resources in response to these false reports carries serious legal consequences, including prison sentences ranging from six months to two years, as well as significant fines.
