Two Types of Hair Loss You Should Know: AGA vs Lichen Planopilaris | Dermatologist Explains

Hair loss is not one condition. Different causes of hair loss can look similar at first, but the biology, risks, and treatment strategies can be completely different. In this video, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Aleksandra Brown explains two commonly confused causes of hair loss: androgenetic alopecia and lichen planopilaris. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair thinning and is driven by genetics and hormones. Lichen planopilaris, on the other hand, is an inflammatory scarring hair loss where the immune system targets the hair follicle. Understanding the difference is critical because treatment approaches are very different, and early diagnosis can significantly impact long-term outcomes.
