Nādabhṛṅga takes great pride in bringing you an outstanding cracker of a concert by the Queen of improvisatory brilliance, Sangita Kalanidhi Mahavidushi Smt. M L Vasanthakumari. This is a recording of her concert at The Music Academy, Madras, performed on the evening of the 30th of December 1960. We are very happy to share this scintillating recording on the same day, 61 years later. Smt. MLV's manodharma forays are particularly spectacular and breathtaking in this concert. Her handling of Kalyāṇī, Bhairavī and Tōḍi are particularly noteworthy. In the Rāgam-Tānam-Pallavi suite, she has executed the Tānam in 3 speeds, with absolute, razor-sharp perfection (incidentally there are very few other musicians in recorded history who have attempted this). Her rendition of the Pallavi is possibly one of the most profound and singularly formidable renditions ever in the history of South Indian Classical Music. Verily, a more skillful and extraordinary musician than her will never take birth. The sheer depth and range of her music completely eclipses anything that is going on in the Carnatic music world today, making it all inconsequential.
