NSF reverses course, preserves critical Ocean Monitoring Network after bipartisan pushback

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has paused plans to dismantle key ocean monitoring equipment off the Oregon coast following pressure from an Oregon congressmember and state lawmakers who argued the network is critical to coastal safety, fisheries, and weather forecasting. The announcement came Thursday after U.S. Sens. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, led a bipartisan effort to stop the planned removal of sensors that are part of the Ocean Observatories Initiative, or OOI.
