The Life and Art of Caravaggio: Art History Explained

If you're a fan of Caravaggio and you liked this video, do leave a comment below. Caravaggio was a bold and fearless painter working in the early Baroque period. The story of Caravaggio is inseparable from the violence of his life, yet it would be a mistake to let the drama of his biography overshadow the beautiful radicalism of his Italian Renaissance paintings. Caravaggio's early oil paintings were lyrical and passionate; his later artworks employed a revolutionary naturalism and dramatic chiaroscuro — the bold use of light and shadow — that made his paintings come alive. This technique would go on to profoundly influence fellow painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Diego Velázquez, defining a generation of Caravaggisti across Europe.
