The Marina Bay Sands is not only the most iconic hotel on Singapore's skyline, but also one of the most extreme civil engineering challenges of the 21st century. Designed by architect Moshe Safdie, this colossal resort and casino complex was built on reclaimed land composed of soft marine clay, an unstable soil that threatened the structure's collapse from day one. To raise the three towers, inclined at 26 degrees, structural engineers implemented reinforced concrete diaphragm walls and a deep foundation with more than 5,000 drilled piles. The greatest technical challenge was the SkyPark, a 10,000-ton steel platform lifted 200 meters high using advanced strand jacking technology. At its summit, the famous 150-meter infinity pool required sliding joints made of aluminum and stainless steel, along with hydraulic systems to withstand strong winds and independent oscillations. Today, the project enters a new phase of expansion with a fourth tower, twisted and tilted at a 45-degree angle, bringing the total investment to nearly eight billion dollars to compete directly with the entertainment giants in Macau and Las Vegas. #singapore #civilengineering #megastructures
