A village with houses having blackboard walls but no windows / Walk around the island village, Heigun Island Part 1 (Yamaguchi Prefecture) Heigun Island is a long, narrow island stretching east to west in the Iyo Nada Sea, 20km south of Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Its highest point is a 468m-high mountain, with many steep slopes and terraced farmland. Settlements are located on the north coast of the eastern end of the island and in a southern cove on the western side. The climate is warm, with strong winds in the summer. Agriculture and fishing are the main industries, and the "Heigun octopus" caught here is particularly delicious and is shipped to the Kansai region. The abundant fish species surrounding the island attract many anglers, and pheasants are released at the foot of the mountain, attracting hunters from both within and outside the prefecture during hunting season. The island's name is said to have originated from the Kamakura period, when Kiso Yoshinaka's son, Heigunmaru, settled here. (Reference: Shimadasu) Higuruni-nishi is formed on sand dunes and slopes facing an inlet called Nishiura. Like Higashiura, many houses have courtyard-style structures for wind protection. Scattered throughout the settlement are raised storehouses with small roofs for ventilation. These are said to be remnants of the village's past tobacco production.
