Recorriendo LA CURVA DE MOLINA Maracaibo | Documental urbano

Molina's Curve is one of the most important historical and strategic points in western Maracaibo. Its history blends the city's spontaneous urban growth, popular commerce, and, in recent years, significant urban intervention. Here's a summary of the key points in its history and evolution: 1. Origin and Name: It originated in the mid-20th century as a simple road intersection on the outskirts of what was then Maracaibo. The growth of neighborhoods to the west (such as the La Limpia and Concepción areas, and the roads to La Guajira) transformed this point into a mandatory crossroads. The popular name "Molina's Curve" comes from an old warehouse or property belonging to a family named Molina, located right on the sharp curve of the road, which served as a landmark for truckers and passengers. 2. The epicenter of transportation and commercial chaos. With the rural exodus and demographic expansion of Maracaibo between the 1970s and 1990s, the sector went from being a periphery to becoming the commercial heart of western Maracaibo, an area where approximately a quarter of the city's population lives. Due to a lack of planning, the Curva de Molina was transformed into a gigantic open-air market of informal economy (street vendors). For decades, the place was synonymous with: An informal and chaotic passenger terminal connecting the city center with the western neighborhoods and neighboring municipalities (such as Jesús Enrique Lossada). Streets clogged with vendors' stalls, accumulated garbage, and completely overwhelmed service infrastructure (sewage, lighting). In times of severe economic crisis, it became a center for the resale of regulated products ("bachaqueo") and the illegal sale of fuel in plastic containers, which led to it being informally nicknamed "Saigoncito" in popular sectors at one time.3. The Intervention and Remodeling (2020) After decades of neglect and failed attempts at reorganization, on January 1, 2020, the Maracaibo Mayor's Office initiated a comprehensive and drastic intervention in the area. Thousands of illegal stalls were demolished, and informal commerce was cleared from the main roads to implement an urban redevelopment plan that transformed the zone: Market Construction: Formal and informal vendors were relocated to new covered spaces (such as the Mercado del Oeste). Curva de Molina Plaza: A large public and pedestrian plaza with green areas for community recreation was built, radically changing the area's appearance. Roads and Transportation: Streets were repaved, public transportation routes were reorganized, and lighting, gas, and sewage collection services were restored. Today, Curva de Molina remains the most vibrant hub of mobility and commerce in western Maracaibo, but under an urban reality completely different from its commercial origins. Follow me on Instagram
