£300 and a Dream: Budget Travel Gone Wild in Portugal

If you’ve ever wondered whether you can have a proper holiday on a budget that barely covers a round of pints at Wetherspoons, you’re in the right place. This is budget travel in 2025—navigating the cost of living crisis while still squeezing every bit of adventure out of a tiny budget. The destination? [MYSTERY LOCATION]. A place where tourism is thriving (if by thriving, you mean overrun with British people who never learned the local language beyond “two beers please”). It’s got a weird charm—well-kept but undeniably dated, like a seaside Milton Keynes with palm trees. The kind of place where you can tell everything was built in a rush during some economic boom, but now you’re left wondering… is it still prosperous? There’s money in the fancy-pants marina, sure, but there are also a fair few abandoned buildings. What happened here? We came in search of a budget-friendly escape, and honestly, we did alright. Here’s what we found: 🏖 The Beaches: Nice, but… The beaches were actually pretty lush, way cleaner than expected. Probably too early in the season for the annual migration of split condoms and discarded full English breakfasts. The water was decent, the sun was warm, and there was just enough space to walk around without tripping over a lobster-red Brit who forgot suncream. But we can only imagine what it’s like in peak season—likely wall-to-wall sunburned dads avoiding their families under the guise of golf trips, groups of chavs on package holidays, and Instagram influencers desperately trying to look “natural.” 🚤 The Marina: Fancy, Over the Top, But Kinda Lush One of those places where you instantly feel underdressed. Big yachts, overpriced drinks, and a weird sense that you’re being judged by a retired hedge fund manager for wearing shorts from Primark. But it was beautiful. The contrast between the marina and the “real” town was wild—one side full of posh bars and crisp white shirts, the other with cheap pints and dodgy takeaway shops. It felt like two different worlds, divided by about 300 metres of cobbled streets. 🌆 The Town: British Tourism Capital of the Universe Seriously. The amount of British people here was astronomical. You could go a whole day without hearing a word of the local language. The town itself was well-cared for, but not exactly what you’d call “authentic.” A lot of the buildings felt like they belonged in a different country—like some developer had a catalogue of “Generic European Resort” designs and went wild. Still, it was nice to walk around. Not particularly pretty, but nice. ⛰ The Cliffs: Absolutely Unreal Probably the most breathtaking part of the whole trip. Towering cliffs, epic views, that kind of dramatic coastline that makes you feel tiny. If you visit, make sure you take the time to explore properly—it’s easily the highlight of the area. Nature at its absolute best. 🎶 The Vibe: Slow Music and Mystery Everywhere we went, the background music was the same—slow songs, but somehow even slower, usually with that rattly percussion thing in the background. It was weirdly hypnotic. The whole place had this odd energy to it, like it was once the place to be, but now it’s stuck in a weird in-between stage. 🤔 Final Thoughts: Would We Recommend It? If you’re looking for a cheap holiday in the cost of living crisis, this isn’t a bad shout. It’s easy to navigate, surprisingly affordable, and if you avoid peak season, you won’t have to fight through waves of stag dos and screaming kids. It left us curious—about its history, about why parts of it feel a little abandoned, about the strange mix of wealth and decay. It’s one of those places that doesn’t give up its secrets easily. Would we come back? Maybe. But preferably in the off-season, when there’s a better chance of getting a sunbed without being sandwiched between a football lad on his fourth pint and a retired couple who haven’t spoken to each other in 20 years.
