Driving the Madeira South West Island Tour | From Waterfalls to Lighthouses

We begin by driving through a waterfall. Then we follow the road to to the village of Ponta do Sol with its attractive colourful buildings and pebble beach, it's a popular weekend destination for Funchal’s residents being one of the sunniest towns in Madeira. It’s also known for some of the best sunsets in Madeira. Our next stop is Fajas Dos Padres, with it's steep cable car leading down to the rural tourism organic farm in Madeira island. Next we visit Madalena Do Mar, which was once an important centre of sugarcane production. Today it has one of the largest banana plantations on the whole island, thanks to its fertile land and mild climate. It hosts the annual Madeira Banana Festival, in July. Stroll on the promenade and the pebble beach, while enjoying the landscape, along the way you will find a few restaurants and bars, and Santa Madalena church. We pass through the small town of Loreto, 2 km east of Calheta, it has a 15th-century chapel with its Manueline south portal and fine geometrically-patterned ceiling and some Levada walks from here. We continue to Prazares, and take time to visit Prazares Orchard and Prazares mini zoo. Next we travel to Ponta Do Pargo and we get to see Ponta Do Pargo Lighthouse and one of the best viewpoints in Madeira. We then travel along one of Madeiras loveliest coastal roads to Paul Do Mar, which feels almost like a Cornish coastal town. Paul do Mar beach, also known as Ribeira das Galinhas (Chicken's River), is one of the most popular pebble beaches on the western coast. Paul do Mar is barely two cobbled-streets wide. On the harbour you’ll find the some of the best fish restaurants on Madeira, where you can eat like locals. Our next stop is South west Madeira’s largest town Calheta. Calheta marina is full of lovely bars and restaurants. Besides its modern marina and golden sandy beach, one of the very few on the island, Calheta is a popular place for many different types of outdoor pursuit, including hiking, mountain biking, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, fishing, paragliding, canyoning, whale- and dolphin-watching and scuba diving, making it one of the best water sport destinations in Portugal.
