At the turn of the 90s, glam metal was at the height of its commercial power. New acts like Slaughter, Firehouse, Trixter, and Saigon Kick, among countless others, in addition to the veterans who'd been around since the genre's early days on Sunset Strip, continued racking up album and ticket sales from teens seeking the surge of power glam metal gave them. However, as these bands continues to oversaturate the market, their record execs pushed them towards either the most shameless slop (i.e. "Cherry Pie") or borderline adult contemporary (i.e. "More Than Words"), and the shifting socioeconomic landscape made the genre's sheer excess less palatable towards Gen X youth, a prime opportunity was open for burgeoning underground rock alternatives from Seattle and elsewhere to steal away the spotlight.
