However, they have a tragic history: they were once hunted in large numbers by sailors for food, causing a drastic decline in their numbers. And there, on Pinta Island, there was the sole surviving Pinta tortoise, Lonesome George. After living alone for over 100 years, his death marks the extinction of the Pinta tortoise species.
