Christian Beliefs That Make No Sense

Have you ever sat down and actually thought about some of the things Christianity asks you to believe? Not in an angry way. Not to attack anyone. Just honestly, carefully, with your brain switched on. That is exactly what this video does. We are not here to mock anyone or make fun of religious people. Some of the smartest and kindest people in history have been believers. But smart people can hold beliefs that do not hold up when examined carefully. And some of the core beliefs of Christianity have never really been examined honestly in public without someone shutting the conversation down. So we are going to have that conversation today. In this video we go through some of the most widely held Christian beliefs and look at them through the lens of basic logic, history, philosophy, and common sense. We talk about the problem of an all-knowing God who punishes people for behaving exactly the way he designed them. We look at prayer and what the actual scientific studies say about it. We go through what the Bible literally says — not the nice parts people read on Sundays, but the parts that endorse slavery, genocide, and the death penalty for working on a Saturday. We talk about Hell. We do the math on infinite punishment for finite crimes and ask whether that is justice or something else entirely. We look at Noah's Ark and the basic physical problems that make the story impossible to take literally. We examine the Resurrection and what historians actually say about when the Gospels were written, by whom, and why the four accounts contradict each other in basic details. We talk about the problem of evil — the oldest philosophical challenge to the existence of God — and why free will does not come close to explaining childhood cancer, tsunamis, or parasites that blind children in developing countries. And we finish by looking at something almost nobody talks about. The fact that the religion a person holds with total certainty is almost entirely determined by where and when they were born. If you were born in Saudi Arabia you would be Muslim with the same certainty you are currently Christian. That is not a sign of truth. That is a sign of geography. None of this is about hatred. None of this is about superiority. It is about asking questions that should have been asked a long time ago. Questions that are more important precisely because they have been treated as forbidden.
