Prof. Dr. Oğuz Özyaral shared a recipe for tartar, a threat to oral health, that uses walnut shells and a glass of water and is effective within five days. The accumulation of food residue, bacteria, and a lack of flossing and brushing habits can lead to tartar formation in the mouth over time. Especially during this period, citizens hesitant to visit the dentist are resorting to practical methods to get rid of tartar, which can pose a problem for their oral health. Preventive Health Specialist Prof. Dr. Oğuz Özyaral from Istanbul Rumeli University explains that maintaining oral and dental health can be achieved at home using simple ingredients, saying, “We boil eight crushed walnut shells in a glass of water for about 10 minutes, until they turn dark. Boiling for longer than 10 minutes can cause the water to become bitter. After boiling the shells, we let them sit for about five minutes, like brewing tea. This liquid, created by boiling walnut shells, which also promotes zero waste, prevents tartar formation.” He said. IT HAS ANTISEPTIC PROPERTIES Prof. Dr. Özyaral explained that walnuts, especially their leaves, contain a substance called juglone, and that this substance has antiseptic properties. He said, “The liquid obtained by boiling the walnut shell will have antiseptic properties, and we will also protect our gums. After brushing our mouths with toothpaste, we will brush our mouths again with the resulting liquid. Then we can brush our teeth again or use a gentle mouthwash. All of these are very important for oral and dental health.” IT CAN ALSO BE USED AS A GARGE Prof. Dr. Özyaral stated that boiled walnut water can also be used as a mouthwash for dental health. Özyaral said, “We can increase the strength of the mouthwash by mixing this liquid with baking soda. The key is to provide antibacterial properties. It doesn't have antiviral properties, but it's necessary to maintain the balance and health of the oral flora. The dark liquid we obtain, containing juglone, will also help dissolve tartar, especially in the area between the gums and teeth. This way, walnut shells won't go to waste, but will be recycled for our health. We protect our oral and dental health and prevent environmental pollution.” CAN BE STORED IN THE REFRIGERATOR FOR 6 TO 7 DAYS Prof. Dr. Özyaral stated that the prepared liquid can be kept in the refrigerator for 6 to 7 days, adding, “We can use this liquid twice a day. Özyaral concluded: “First, you rinse your mouth with toothpaste or an antiseptic mouthwash to clean it. There shouldn't be any food residue in there. We need to continue brushing clean teeth with a dark-colored solution. This solution will help dissolve the tartar that has formed on our teeth. To remove that dark color, you can brush your mouth again with your toothpaste for relief. You'll see the results within 5-6 days of starting.
