Half an hour later, the fire department suddenly appeared at the door, alerted by the construction workers. Husum's mayor claims that Michael verbally agreed to the demolition: "Everything happened very quickly; there wasn't enough time to put the process in writing." "Michael was completely out of it and he never signed anything to agree to the demolition," Claudia and other neighbors say, saving Michael's furniture and belongings before the excavator begins demolition. "A scandal! The public order office is supposed to put a written record in place when a citizen wants to demolish a house," Michael's lawyer is preparing a lawsuit against the city and the building contractor. The demolition company and the construction company have not responded to our written inquiry. "So many memories are attached to this house," Michael says, looking at old photos in his homeless shelter.
