It is approximately 20 kilometers from the Sarp Border Gate, which is the Turkey - Georgia Border. During the Crimean Campaign of Yavuz Sultan Selim, the Artvin region came under Ottoman control. In 1509, with the conquest of the Gönye castle, which is outside our borders today, and turning it into a sanjak, Hopa was connected to this sanjak.
