As we’ve seen in the anime so far, the abilities of a titan shifter can change based on certain factors, with an example being how Eren gained hardening after consuming the armor serum; or how Falco’s shifter is essentially a hybrid between the jaw and beast titans. Today I’ll be explaining why the original armoured titan was very likely a hybrid just like this and along the way we’ll be answering a few mysteries about the old eldian empire. Ok so to explain this armoured titan theory we need to flashback around 2000 years, to a time when there was only one shifter on the entire planet. That shifter was of course the original founding titan Ymir, and after her death King Fritz was desperate to make sure, that the eldian empire didn’t lose her power. Since she was the first ever titan nobody knew if her ability could be passed down and so he made his daughters eat Ymir in the hope that maybe that would do something. Luckily for him the idea worked even better than he could’ve hoped, as Ymir’s power wasn’t just passed on to a single person, but rather it was divided between the 3 of them. Maria, Rose and Sina each inherited their own unique titan shifters that had never been seen before and in the process, they became the first hybrid titans. What I mean by hybrids is that their 3 shifters would’ve inherited a mixture of different traits from Ymir, for instance one of them might’ve been larger than the others, another might’ve specialised in hardening, while another would have a more beast like appearance. What this all means is that Fritz discovered a way for Eldia to increase the amount of shifters they had, which is why within just a few generations, the empire went from having only 1 titan to having an army of 9. These 9 titans each had their own unique characteristics as we know, but from the beginning it was obvious that some were more closely related than others. For example, the jaw, cart and beast titans all share animalistic features that none of the other shifters posses and in the final arc of the series Isayama went out of his way to highlight just how similar they are. The clear resemblance between them isn’t a coincidence, but rather it’s the result of these 3 titans descending from the animalistic titan hybrid. In that way the beast, cart and jaw would essentially be siblings as the three of them descended from one specific daughter of ymir. This brings us to the most important trio of titans, which are the armor, warhammer and founder. When we look into their history, it’s undeniable that these 3 are the most naturally gifted when it comes to harnessing the power of titan hardening. For 2000 years they’ve evidenced this in various ways, whether it be Karl Fritz using the founder to form the 3 enormous walls on Paradis; or whether its' the different warhammer using hardening to create any weapon they want. These are things that no shifters are naturally able to do and although the armoured isn’t currently on that level, it doesn’t mean that its always been that way. We’ve already established that the 9 titans of today are simply the offshoots of hybrid titans that used to exist, so it stands to reason that 2000 years ago, the first armoured titan was actually a hybrid between the armor and warhammer. This is supported by the fact when you examine them side by side, they are the only shifters in history to ever have any type of shell or plates built onto their body. That alone makes it clear that they were closely related in the same way that the jaw and cart titan are related, and this is where the concept for this theory came from.
