5 : How to Rig a Mic Inside a tie & Reduce Cable Noise

Simon from URSA shows some techniques for reducing cable noise & wiring up ties using Sanken COS11 Mics. The basic tips here are : don't let the cables get too tight just under the mic, to achieve this you can create a small loop and stick this down with a small strip of sticky tape (I use 3M Durapore). Then just make sure the cables don't get too tight as vibrations travel up tight copper wires! We then move onto a tie rig and talk about the best way to get a cable into the knot without seeing it (go through the button hole) and some alternative positions for the mic inside the knot. Basically less is more with tie knots - sometimes no sticky tape at all does the trick just so long as the mic is sticking out in free air and is held firmly inside knot. However our preference is to use some Joe's Sticky Stuff/Gak Tac/Snot Tape just below the capsule to create a bit of air around the mic and keep it stuck where you want it.
