Thanks to her so-called active wheelchair, which she can push herself, Sabine B. can live independently despite her paralysis. Cost: around €4,500. HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY REFUSES COVERAGE When she applied for coverage from her health insurance company, they refused. Instead, she is offered a cheaper alternative: a push wheelchair. However, with this, she could only be pushed. Sabine B. files an appeal with her health insurance company, Securvita. She is supported in this by the social welfare organization VdK, which assists people with disabilities in applying for assistive devices. HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANY RECOMMENDS CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE Lawyer Dorothee Willmann is very familiar with such cases: "The reason could also be that the health insurance company says the assistive device is not economical, meaning there is a cheaper alternative. Then you should check, perhaps with your doctor, whether the alternative offered by the insurance company might also be suitable. If you conclude: No, then you should have this confirmed by your doctor. And whenever you receive an official written rejection from the health insurance company, you must also file an official appeal." DIFFICULTIES WITH AN EXPENSIVE CHILD SEAT Twelve-year-old Lea has congenital tetraspasticity in all limbs and cannot sit or stand on her own.
