5 strategies to SCAFFOLD your lessons - BUILDING ON to ensure student achievement and engagement
Scaffolding is about ‘building on’. It’s about your lesson planning and the way you break a goal into parts, building students’ skills so they can move up one step at a time until they have all the necessary skills to achieve. Here are my five strategies for successful scaffolding: 00:00 - Introduction 00:24 - What is scaffolding? 02:35 - STRATEGY 1: Have a clear goal – know what you’re aiming for (the final product) 02:44 - STRATEGY 2: Break the goal into steps / building blocks and ensure these follow a LOGICAL SEQUENCE. --- 02:52 - Example one: Writing a personal response. 09:05 - STRATEGY 3: Mind your language – avoid confusion by using words that might confuse students and be consistent with the words you use. 09:50 - STRATEGY 4: Presentation – Signposting – students need to see the steps and know when they’re moving from one to the next. 11:40 - STRATEGY 5: Checking for understanding – wee activities that show you that students have mastered that step (aka formative assessment if you want the flash word for it). --- 12:30 - Example two: For the kiwi teachers – 1.1 Context Shapes Language 17:50 - Summary - recapping our 5 strategies Read the blog post here: https://www.driveresources.org/post/s...
