Originally from Wakami Town, Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture (now Oga City). Joined the Lotte Orions as the third pick in the 1979 draft. In 1981, he led the team in batting with a .326 average, and continued to lead the team for three consecutive years until 1983. In 1982, he became the youngest Triple Crown winner in history at age 28. In 1985, he achieved an astonishing .367 batting average, 52 home runs, and 146 RBIs, earning him a second Triple Crown and the Pacific League Most Valuable Player (MVP). In 1986, he became the first player in history to win the Triple Crown for the third time, achieving two consecutive years. He subsequently played for the Chunichi Dragons (1987-1993), Yomiuri Giants (1994-1996), and Nippon-Ham Fighters (1997 and 1998). He retired in 1998. His career stats were 2,236 games played, 2,371 hits in 7,627 at-bats, 510 home runs, 1,564 RBIs, 65 stolen bases, and a .311 batting average. After retiring, he worked as a baseball commentator and coach. In 2004, he became the manager of the Chunichi Dragons, leading them to an immediate league championship. In 2007, he led the team to its first Japan Series title in 53 years. In 2011, he became the first team in team history to win consecutive league championships. During his eight-year term, he led the team to Class A status every year, and built an "ever-winning team" that won the league championship four times and the Japan Series once. From October 2013 to January 2017, he served as the Chunichi Dragons' first general manager (GM). In 2007, he received the Shoriki Matsutaro Award, given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of professional baseball. In 2011, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame as a player.
