Most Catholics have never been taught how to think seriously about the period immediately after death. What happens to the soul? Can the dead remain near the living in any way? How should Catholics respond to dreams, strange experiences, or a sense that a departed soul needs prayer? And most importantly, what can the living do to help the dead? This Catholic teaching explains death with sobriety, hope, and doctrinal clarity. At death, the soul separates from the body and undergoes the particular judgment. The soul then enters heaven, hell, or purgatory. Purgatory is not a second chance and not a temporary hell. It is the purification of the saved, the final mercy by which souls who die in God’s grace are made ready for the full vision of Him. Spiritism, mediums, séances, channeling, spirit boards, and attempts to summon the dead are forbidden and spiritually dangerous.
