Pure Sicily: Baroque Highlights in Messina and a Fiery Finale at Sea! In Vlog 8 of our Mediterranean cruise on the AIDAstella, we reach the gateway to Sicily: the port of Messina. From our balcony cabin, we can already see the bustling activity at the terminal, where dozens of tour buses await passengers. After breakfast, however, it's time for us to explore Messina on our own! The Perfect Stroll Through Messina We disembark right past the world-famous AIDA kiss mark. Our city tour first takes us past the imposing Palazzo Zanca, before we enjoy some shade in the verdant Villa Mazzini Park. We continue on to the historic Neptune Fountain (Fontana di Nettuno) and along the Passeggiata a Mare Messina promenade with its magnificent views of the water. On our way back along Via Vittorio Emanuele II, we do a little ship-spotting, strolling past the gigantic Norwegian Epic and our own AIDAstella. Sicilian Culinary Delights & the Piazza del Duomo What would Italy be without excellent coffee? At Miscela d'Oro - Sicilia 1946, we take a break for typical Sicilian cake and espresso. Refreshed, we wander through the pedestrian zone of Viale S. Martino and grab a hearty, local lunch at the famous Rosticceria Famulari. The cultural highlight awaits us at Piazza del Duomo: the magnificent Basilica Cattedrale Santa Maria Assunta. After a quick photo stop at the "I Love Messina" sign, we head back on board. Dolphins, Burger Check & the Etna Spectacular We spend the afternoon relaxing with a game of cards on the aft deck and enjoying the departure from Messina. Back in our cabin, the next surprise awaited us: A pod of dolphins leaped right past our balcony! After the fantastic musical show "Musical Dreams" by the AIDAstars in the Theatrium, we tried the Best Burger restaurant on board the Stella – highly recommended! The absolute highlight came at 10:00 p.m.: We passed the active volcano Mount Etna. Although we were far away by ship, in the darkness we could clearly see the volcano spewing glowing lava and the lava flows cascading down the mountain.
