David Opio's innovation offers his Buvuma island community clean source of electricity

A young ICT innovator born in Buvuma district, Buvuma Island has brought light in form of electricity to his village, bringing clean energy electricity to a fishing community that has lived in the dark for years. David Opio Obwangamoi innovation works on dynamo technology and can power more than 50 homes. He is confident that in future his innovation should be able to reduce the energy poverty for a number of households depending on wood energy, and transform their lives economically. Uganda is among the countries in Africa with the lowest electricity access rates. According to the Bureau of Statistics access to electricity by Ugandans is at 14 %. 40 % of urban households have access to electricity, while only 5% of rural households have access to electricity. According to the Uganda National Development Plan 2010/2011-2014/2015, the demand for electricity is estimated to be growing at between 10 –12% per annum Uganda.
