He grew up in a close and loving family with his parents, Tom Brady Sr. and Galynn Brady, and his three older sisters, Nancy, Julie, and Maureen. Being the youngest child and the only boy, Tom learned to be competitive at an early age. His parents taught him to work hard, stay humble, and always respect others. These lessons would stay with him throughout his life. As a child, Tom loved sports. He enjoyed playing football, baseball, and basketball with friends and family. One of his biggest inspirations was legendary quarterback Joe Montana of the San Francisco 49ers. Tom often watched Montana play and dreamed that one day he could become an NFL quarterback too. Even as a young boy, he believed that anything was possible if he worked hard enough. Tom attended Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo. There, he played both football and baseball. He was a talented baseball catcher and was even drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1995. However, Tom decided not to pursue baseball because football was his true passion. Instead, he accepted a football scholarship to the University of Michigan. Life at Michigan was not easy. During his first two seasons, Tom spent most of his time on the bench because older quarterbacks were chosen ahead of him. Many players would have given up, but Tom refused to quit. He trained every day, studied the game, and patiently waited for his opportunity. His determination impressed his coaches and teammates. By his junior year, Tom finally became Michigan's starting quarterback. He led the team through several exciting victories and became known for staying calm under pressure. In his final college game, he helped Michigan defeat Alabama in the 2000 Orange Bowl, ending his college career on a high note. Although he had played well, many NFL scouts still doubted his abilities. They thought he was too slow and not athletic enough to become a star quarterback. The 2000 NFL Draft was one of the most difficult days of Tom's life. He watched as team after team selected other players while his name remained uncalled. Finally, with the 199th overall pick in the sixth round, the New England Patriots chose him. Tom was disappointed that so many teams had passed on him, but he promised himself that he would prove everyone wrong. During his rookie season, Tom was the Patriots' backup quarterback behind veteran Drew Bledsoe. He spent most of the year learning the team's system, practicing hard, and preparing for any chance to play. That opportunity came in 2001 when Bledsoe suffered a serious injury early in the season.
