Violations of the law of war, or international humanitarian law (IHL), are accumulating in the context of the conflicts tearing the world apart. This is particularly true in Ukraine and Gaza. In this context, it is important to revisit the rules that govern conflicts and that are supposed to prevent atrocities, at least on paper. What is the law of war? What is its origin? What are its principles and sources? Who is responsible for enforcing it and how? What are its limitations?
