But behind these waters lies a story that few know. The place where we now see part of the reservoir housed communities, farms, roads and, above all, the old Barra de Santana, a village that was part of the lives of countless families for generations. A little-known fact is that Barra de Santana had origins dating back more than a century, being an important meeting point for residents of the region, especially during religious festivals and community events. With the construction of the dam, it became necessary to create a new community to accommodate the residents who had to leave their old homes. Thus was born Nova Barra de Santana, planned to offer better infrastructure and quality of life to its inhabitants. Another interesting fact is that, during periods of severe drought, the Piranhas-Açu River would reach extremely low levels in some sections. Today, the dam functions as a gigantic strategic reserve, helping to guarantee water supply for cities, rural communities, and economic activities in various regions of the state. From above, it is possible to perceive the impressive dimension of the work. What seems like a simple mirror of water represents decades of planning, studies, and investments to face one of the greatest challenges of the semi-arid Northeast: water scarcity. Few people also know that the Oiticica Dam is part of a larger water security system linked to the São Francisco River water integration project.
