I put Skrillex's latest hit (Duro, featuring Young Miko) under the microscope: separate stems, spectrum analyzer, Mid/Side, loudness... and I found something no one mentions. There's real sub-bass in the Side channel (the stereo one), even though everyone says you should keep the bass in mono. Spoiler alert: it's not a mistake, and I'll explain exactly why it works. In this analysis, I dissect the mixing and mastering of Duro from A to Z: tonal balance (why it's so bright without being aggressive), drum and sidechain processing, transient management and the famous "perceived punch," loudness (LUFS, true peak, and why everyone makes such a fuss about it), the ultra-simple sound design of the bass and lead, stereo width in Mid/Side, and vocal processing (the real secret to modern, bright, present, and ultra-controlled vocals). For copyright reasons, I don't share the original audio: everything is done through stems and visual analysis. Whether you produce EDM, dubstep, techno, or something else, there are concrete techniques to reverse-engineer and apply directly to your own productions. Let me know in the comments if you'd like more track reviews like this (type "review track"). Tired of watching hours of YouTube tutorials without seeing real results? You've come to the right place.
