When someone says, “This is harming me,” the answer is not to dig deeper, push harder, or insist they should feel grateful. The answer is to pause long enough to hear, to change course when needed, or to step away altogether. For compassion is not proving that our heart was in the right place. Compassion is caring enough to alter our path when the road we chose is leading someone else into pain.
