Scarlatti: Sonatas Played on Piano

Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757) was an Italian composer best known for his extensive output of keyboard sonatas, written primarily for the harpsichord. Though he was born in Naples and trained in the Italian Baroque tradition, much of his mature work was composed during his time in Portugal and Spain, where he served as a court musician. Scarlatti’s sonatas are typically short, single-movement pieces written in binary form (two sections, each repeated). Despite their compact structure, they display remarkable variety in mood, texture, and technique. Many sonatas feature rapid scales, hand crossings, and bold harmonic shifts, reflecting both Scarlatti’s inventive style and the influence of Iberian folk music.
