Polish first or Set stones first? -Silver Smithing 306

So the question is: Should I set the stones first, or polish the jewelry first when making a new piece? Each of us has our ways and techniques which we've either been taught, learned, or developed over time. While it is hard to say which is best as each piece has a different set of circumstances, In general I feel it is best to fully polish each piece before I set the stones, and then do additional touch up polishing after the stones are set. Some might say that it is best to set al the stones as soon as possible and then finish the ring. There are two examples where this might be the best way to do things: 1. If you are being paid by the piece and speed over quality is your main objective, then this is faster in most cases. 2. If you are working with only diamonds, then you have very little risk of damaging or scratching the stones while you are working around them. The diamonds will also hold up to all forms of cleaning (Ultrasonic, steam, chemical dips and so on). Ultimately, as the choice is up to you and since there are various factors to consider, experience over time will be your ultimate guide.
