Hartlepool Headland is located on the North East coast of England in County Durham. The area has a rich history dating back to the medieval times when it was a prominent seaport and a key site of the English Civil War. Heugh Battery Museum During the First World War, Hartlepool Headland played a crucial role in Britain's coastal defenses. The Heugh Gun Battery, situated on a hill overlooking the sea, was one of the key defensive positions protecting the town from enemy attack. The battery was heavily armed with four 4.7-inch guns and two 6-inch guns, which were used to defend against the German Navy's bombardment of the town on December 16, 1914. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the battery fought valiantly and managed to score several hits on the enemy ships, forcing them to retreat. The battery became a symbol of British resistance during the war and played an important role in the eventual victory. https://www.heughbattery.co.uk/ Heugh Lighthouse The Heugh Lighthouse, located on the Headland of Hartlepool was constructed in 1847 by Stephen Robinson. Over the years, the Heugh Lighthouse underwent several changes and improvements. The original lighthouse was dismantled in 1915 following the Germain raid on Hartlepool headland as it was determined that it obstructed the line of fire from the guns of the Headland batteries. Steetley Pier Further up from Hartlepool Headland, Steetley pier was used to pump sea water to the magnesia treatment works until it's closure in 2005.
