She elevated thumri via performing classical and light classical in the music concerts. She was born and bought up in Varanasi, and she learned to sing khyal and tappa from Sarju Prasad Misra (vocalist and sarangi player). She also acted in the movie "Yaad rahe". Girija Devi made her public debut in 1949 on All India Radio Allahabad, and her first public concert in Bihar in 1951. She worked as a faculty member of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata and the Banaras Hindu University. She taught several students preserving musical heritage. Her repertoire included kajri, chaiti (the semi-classical genres ), holi, khyal, Indian folk music, and tappa. Her semi-classical singing combined regional characteristics of the songs of Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. To the lovers of Hindustani classical music, Girija Devi's name is an acme of perfection in the arena of thumri.
